Why Freelancing Isn’t for Everyone (Even If It Sounds Like a Dream)

My honest thoughts about freelancing and what I've learnt

Hey Fun Gs,

Freelancing sounds like a dream, right?
Work your own hours, choose your projects, be your own boss, and work in pyjamas if you feel like it.

That’s what I used to imagine back when I was working full-time. I’d sit at my 9–5 desk job daydreaming about how free I’d feel once I made the jump.

Spoiler alert: freelancing is not for the weak.

I don’t say that to scare anyone off — but to be real. As a freelancer, you’re not just the designer. You’re the admin team, the accountant, the social media manager, the project lead, the client liaison, the strategist… and sometimes the therapist (to yourself 😂).

What’s wild is, I got into freelancing because I wanted more creative control. I wanted to spend my time creating the work I was passionate about. But the reality? A lot of my time goes into business — not creativity. And finding the balance between the two is honestly the hardest part.

And let’s talk social media…
It’s been such a blessing for me — I get so many opportunities through it. But it also means my brain is constantly on. I’m always scrolling, planning, ideating, and thinking: what’s next? what do I post? what will perform?

Burnout creeps in faster than you'd think. And if you’re not naturally self-motivated or organised, it can feel like a total uphill climb.

Plus — no one really talks about how inconsistent freelance life can be. One month you’re booked and busy, the next you’re wondering when the next client will come through. That unpredictability? Some people thrive on it. Others? Not so much.

But don’t get me wrong — I still love freelancing.
Being in control of my time, my space, and my creative direction? That’s priceless. And honestly, I’ve grown so much both professionally and personally. But I do wish I knew more of this before I jumped in.

If you’re curious about what freelancing really looks like as a digital fashion artist, I just dropped a new Patreon video where I get even more honest — sharing personal struggles, lessons from 5 years of freelancing, and tips on how to manage the creative-business juggle.
