Learning how to make chains and necklaces in Clo3d
I figured it out so now it’s time to share it with you all
Hi Fun Gs,
This is a particular digital fashion design skill that I have been yearning to learn for such a long time. And, I finally found out how to do it!
Making accessories has been a bit of a painful task to achieve with cloth simulation software like Marvelous Designer, Clo3d and Style3d. This is because these programs were not created with rigid/hard-boy simulation utilities in mind. There are ways around this, however, and I’ve found two ways that could help you:
Make a trim OBJ and use it as a topstitch on fabric to mimic the chain movement
Simulate accessories in another 3D program such as Blender, C4D or Houdini
In my latest tutorial, I’ve decided to use option 1 with the majority of my simulation based in Clo3d. To be clear, there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to 3D design as many 3D programs can achieve the same look with a different process. But, this option is the best solution for me right now.
Part 1 of the tutorial can be found here:
Part 2 of the tutorial will be found on Patreon where my patrons will have access to the scene file as well as exclusive access to the texturing section within Substance Painter. Plus, there will be extra tips on how to add chains to the trousers.
Twitch Streams
Just in case you didn’t know, I also do weekly Twitch streams every Wednesday at 9pm BST.
I’ve also been posting a “Making mistakes on stream” series on my socials and they’ve received some sort of virality (I’m not 100% sure why, but please hit me up if anyone knows!). My streams are not only a way for me to connect with my fellow Fun Gs, but they also offer a window into how my 3D assets are created. And mistakes are completely normal. This is why I think it is important to show them to people so they can understand that learning 3D is not a perfect and quick process.
Make sure to tag along if you are keen on watching my digital fashion creation process live. It’s always a ton of fun and everyone is welcome!
